IBM Storwize V7000 Technical Overview

IBM Storwize V7000 is a dual-controller storage array (with a future roadmap to scale up to eight controllers, similar in architecture to IBM SVC). Each controller is powered by a quad-core Jasper Forest (Nehalem-based) processor, enabling virtualization of a three-tier backend storage architecture over SAS connectivity.

The system is built on the IBM SAN Volume Controller (SVC) software stack, delivering advanced capabilities such as storage virtualization, thin provisioning, and data protection. It also integrates the user-friendly graphical interface from IBM XIV high-end storage systems, along with DS8000 RAID technology and Easy Tier automated storage tiering.

In essence, Storwize V7000 represents a convergence of IBM’s key storage technologies into a unified platform.

Host Connectivity and Storage Architecture

The V7000 provides 8 Gbit/s Fibre Channel host interfaces, with optional support for up to four 1 Gbit/s iSCSI ports. iSCSI is natively supported.

Its three-tier storage architecture includes:

  • Tier 1 (Performance): STEC 300GB SSDs for high-speed data access

  • Tier 2 (Capacity/Performance): 2.5-inch SAS drives using 6 Gbit/s SAS II interface

  • Tier 3 (Capacity): 3.5-inch 7200 RPM SATA drives for high-capacity storage

Enclosure and Scalability

The IBM Storwize V7000 control enclosure is a 2U rack-mounted unit, supporting:

  • Up to 24 × 2.5-inch drives, or

  • Up to 12 × 3.5-inch drives

With 600GB 10K SAS drives and 2TB nearline SAS drives, a single enclosure can provide:

  • 14.4TB or 24TB raw capacity

The system supports up to nine expansion enclosures, enabling:

  • Up to 240 small form-factor drives or 120 large form-factor drives

  • Total capacity scaling to approximately 144TB or 240TB

Flexibility and Efficiency

IBM Storwize V7000 offers high flexibility in drive selection, with no strict limitations on vendor or capacity. SSDs and HDDs can coexist within the same enclosure, enabling highly adaptable storage configurations.

By utilizing only around 6% of total capacity in SSD tiering, the system can deliver up to 200% performance improvement.

In addition, compared to competing systems, V7000 can reduce physical storage footprint by up to 67% and significantly lower power consumption. It also supports thin provisioning to eliminate unused allocated storage waste.

Key Storage Efficiency Technologies

1. Storage Virtualization

Storwize V7000 is built on SAN Volume Controller (SVC) virtualization technology, the core of IBM’s storage virtualization strategy. It aggregates storage into a unified virtual pool across three tiers and can integrate IBM and third-party storage systems.

It shares codebase elements with IBM XIV high-end storage systems, providing enterprise-class functionality in a midrange platform.

2. Easy Tier Automated Tiering

Easy Tier continuously monitors I/O patterns and automatically migrates frequently accessed data (extents) to SSD storage for optimal performance.

It features self-learning algorithms that dynamically move less frequently accessed data to lower-cost capacity tiers.

3. Thin Provisioning

Thin provisioning enables dynamic allocation of storage resources, ensuring capacity is only consumed when needed. This avoids over-allocation scenarios and improves overall storage efficiency.

4. Real-Time Compression

IBM Storwize V7000 includes real-time compression technology, allowing data reduction of up to 80%. This enables customers to store significantly more data within the same physical footprint—up to 5× effective capacity improvement in certain workloads.

5. Deduplication (Planned Enhancement)

Data deduplication is part of IBM’s future roadmap for Storwize V7000. IBM has integrated advanced deduplication technologies through its acquisition of Diligent and implementation in ProtecTIER solutions.

This technology has demonstrated up to 90% storage reduction in certain enterprise environments, particularly in backup and healthcare workloads.
